What Is Earned Media?

Earned Media is coverage, mentions, or attention a brand receives without paying for it, such as press coverage, industry analyst mentions, organic backlinks, or a third party citing a brand’s research. It’s called “earned” because it isn’t purchased or self-published; it’s a reaction to something a brand did or published that was worth someone else’s attention.

Why Is Earned Media Important?

Earned media carries a credibility that paid and owned media can’t manufacture, because the audience knows a brand didn’t pay for it or write it about itself. In cybersecurity specifically, being cited by an industry publication or referenced in an analyst report often does more to establish trust with a technical buyer than any amount of brand-authored content. The tradeoff is control: a brand can influence the conditions that make earned media more likely, but it can’t schedule or guarantee it.

Can You Use Earned Media In A Sentence, Please?

“We didn’t pitch a single reporter. The original research report earned media coverage on its own because the data was genuinely useful.”
